My First ARSL Experience

My first ARSL experience was one I will never forget. Traveling to Burlington, Vermont, for the Association for Rural & Small Libraries conference was so much more than attending a professional conference—it was an opportunity to learn, connect, laugh, and be reminded of why I love working in libraries.

From the moment I arrived, I was surrounded by people who understood the unique joys and challenges of serving a small community. It was refreshing to be with librarians who “get it”—people who wear many hats, solve problems creatively, and believe deeply in the importance of their libraries.

The conference gave me the chance to learn new ideas, discover resources, and hear about innovative programs happening in libraries across the country. But some of my favorite moments happened outside the sessions. Sharing meals, conversations, stories, and plenty of laughs with other librarians created connections that I hope will last long after the conference ended.

And then there was Burlington itself. The beautiful scenery, Lake Champlain, the trees, the food, and the charm of Vermont made the experience even more memorable. I loved getting to explore, enjoy good food, and make memories with wonderful people.

My first ARSL experience reminded me that being a library director can sometimes feel like you are doing everything on your own—but there is an incredible community of people doing this work alongside you.

I came home with new ideas, new friendships, renewed energy, and a little more inspiration to bring back to my own library and community.

ARSL wasn’t just a conference. It was a reminder of why we do what we do. And I can’t wait for the next one. ❤️📚🌲
