Day 2 Delphi

  • Temple of Apollo: The core sanctuary, where the oracle spoke.

  • Ancient Theatre: Seating up to 5,000 spectators for musical competitions.

  • Ancient Stadium: Located at the highest point, for athletic events.

  • Tholos of Athena Pronaia: A circular, iconic monument.

  • Delphi Archaeological Museum: Houses masterpieces like the Charioteer of Delphi and the Sphinx of Naxos

According to myth, Zeus released two eagles from opposite ends of the earth, and they met at Delphi, marking it as the center. Apollo is said to have slain the serpent Python here to claim the site, with the oracle originally belonging to Gaea (Mother Earth)

Delphi is situated between two towering rocks of Mount Parnassus known as the Phaidriades Rocks. (The two eagles) I had no idea Greece had a ski resort and such high elevation.

The Oracle of Delphi (Pythia): For over a thousand years, pilgrims—from commoners to kings—traveled to Delphi to hear prophecies from the Pythia, a high priestess who gave ambiguous answers that shaped Greek history, including decisions on war and colonization.

Delphi was a dedicated to the Greek god Apollo.

Developed in the 8th century B.C., the sanctuary was home to the Oracle of Delphi and the priestess Pythia, who was known throughout the ancient world for divining the future. It was also home of the Pythian Games, the second most important games in Greece after the Olympics. Delphi declined with the rise of Christianity and was ultimately buried under the site of a new village.

I have no idea what this little door goes to. I 100% wanted to pry it open, but was afraid it would not be full of munchkins, but rather snakes 🐍

Pythian Games: Held every four years, these were the second most important games in Greece after the Olympics, featuring both athletic and musical competitions

I forgot one of the highlights of the day. The girls picked fresh lemons 🍋 with Tyler. Just in the parking lot of our hotel.

Our bus is the perfect size and our group is wonderful together.

Our first night was Hotel London. These three college kids from Idaho are delightful and eager to learn.

Stay tuned for more like #CatsOfGreece and maybe even a whole blog of food pictures.
